More printing

It has been a busy weekend in the studio with more of my City & Guilds students joining me for a couple of days of printing and stencilling.

Lots of techniques and art materials were explored to see what effects could be made on paper and fabric.
This is a gallery of photos from the day.

I had a lovely time as well using one wooden printing block to make these  printed charm squares.

Now to decide what to make with them

City & Guilds News

Many moons have passed since my last blog post but believe me I have been busy.

Nine students have completed their City & Guilds courses and I would like to congratulate them for all their hard work.

Level 1 Hand Embroidery - Helen Macintosh and Helen Atkinson

Level 1 Patchwork & Quilting - Anne Wilkinson, Wendy Harkness, Sue Ives, Clare Raymond Barker and Jon Massey

Level 2 Patchwork & Quilting - Paula Tidman and Deborah Moore.

Their work has been a joy to go through and I look forward to seeing them progress in the future. I will post pictures of their work soon.

Meanwhile I have been kept on my toes my by current City & Guilds students.
We have been having wonderful messy days in my home studio, printing, silk screen, thermofax, mono printing and block printing. We have also been stencilling and using discharge pastes.

We are busy again this weekend and I am amazed at all the work that my students produce in such a short time.

Packing Up??

I know I am meant to be packing my studios away in preparation for the building work but I couldn't resist having a bit of a play.
We have been away for a week in France, and so visiting the Festival of Quilts yesterday gave me itchy fingers. I bought a gelli plate and couldn't resist getting it dirty. My mono printing needs practice I think less is more in this case.

Colouricious printing blocks and gelli plate

I love this block

And I like the more indistinct images here.

I couldn't resist making some more pages for the Spiral Sketchbook

And finally a couple of pictures of some visitors  to our Gite last week

And a hedgehog

Now back to the packing

Printing with Maggie Grey

Yesterday I looked back though old sketchbooks and folders, and came across these wonderful fabrics. I had completely forgotton about. I love Celtic patterns and designs. The source picture was two interlocked people.

A day school with Maggie Grey prompted a great day of printing, with a stamp made from a polystyrene pizza tray  and a sharp pencil. A loop of masking tape on the back to help lift the stamp and I was away.

Acrylic paints
expandaprint
Acrylic paint and black cotton fabric made  rich textures and colours. Printing with expandaprint and heat treating the surface has given even more texture.

If you are a regular reader you will have seen that I have several projects on the go. These have now added to the pile. I can't wait to embellish them.

Happy stitching

Exploring Printing

We had a great afternoon exploring printing lead by Pam at the Peterborough branch of the Embroiderers' Guild. At times it was so quiet you could hear the preverbial pin drop,  as everyone was busy printing and stamping away.

I chose to keep to a simple colour scheme, burnt umber, brick and ivory highlights ( I must still be in an Autumnal mode)

We worked from the darkest colour to the lightest, offsetting the prints each time to give a layered effect. Using sheer fabrics and nets gave us even more effects.
In the past I have always been frustrated by printing as I sought the perfect print and was often thwarted by smudges, too little or too much paint. This method freed me from these frustrations.  I can certainly see more printing in the future.
